Pulmonologist from St. Vincent's Warns of Health Effects from Wildfire Smoke

Phyisicans at St. Vincent's Medical Center are warning people about the health effects of the smoke from recent wildfires.  Doctors say they are seeing a rise in the number of patients complaining about irritation from smoke.

Pulmonologist Dr. Thomas Szwed, who works at St. Vincent's Medical Center, says people exercising outdoors may feel the effects.

Clay County Enacts Burn Ban

GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. -- Clay County has no enacted a burn ban that will stay in effect until further notice.

The County Manager issued the ban in response to dry conditions which are adding to the likelihood of wildfires breaking out.

That means residents aren't allowed to do any outdoor burning, including bon fires, campfires and burning yard waste.

There are 31 active wildfires of 100 acres or more throughout the state, and Florida has declared a state of emergency through June 10.

No Change in Solid Waste Collection Services for Memorial Day

On Monday, May 30, 2011 Memorial Day, Advanced Disposal Services will collect wastes and recyclables as usual.  Please remember to place materials at the curb before 6:00 am.

Rosemary Hill Solid Waste Management Facility will open at the regularly scheduled time (7:30 AM) and will close at 5:30 PM.

The Florida Division of Forestry in cooperation with the Clay County Division of Emergency Management is presenting How to Have a Firewise Home in three locations, including Thursday May 26, 2011, 6:30PM- 8:30PM at the Fleming Island Plantation Splash Park, 1510 Calming Waters Dr. Fleming Island, Tuesday, June 7, 2011, 6:00PM – 8:30PM at Keystone Heights City Hall, 555 S Lawrence Blvd (SR 21), Keystone Heights, and Thursday, June 9, 2011, 6:00PM – 8:30PM at the Clay County Agricultural Center, 2497 State Road 16 West, Green Cove Springs. The workshops will help homeowners learn how to best protect their homes from wildfire.  Everyone is welcome to come to these free workshops, and dinner will be provided.
