Three United Way Initiatives Named September Nominees;

Kicks-Off Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida’s September 15 Campaign

Jacksonville, FL – Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida, Inc. (BCBSF) has named the Epilepsy Foundation of Florida (EFOF) the August winner of its The Pursuit social media campaign. The Epilepsy Foundation of Florida serves as the lead advocate for the rights and needs of people with epilepsy and seizure disorders at the local, county and state level. EFOF provides many valuable services to individuals and their families, regardless of their financial situation, serving over 360,000 Floridians.

Designed to highlight and reward non-profit organizations that assist Floridians in their pursuit of health, each month BCBSF’s The Pursuit campaign features three philanthropic organizations on the company’s Facebook Fan page that have created new health, wellness, educational or social empowerment opportunities for underserved communities throughout the state. Florida residents are then invited to vote for the non-profit that most resonates with them.  BCBSF awards $3,000 to the non-profit with the most votes, and give the runners-up $1,000 each.

In the month of September, three separate United Way programs will featured as part of BCBSF’s annual United Way campaign which begins on September 15:

  • Born Learning - Since children don’t come with instruction manuals, many parents struggle to understand their role and responsibilities as their child’s primary caregiver and first teacher. Born Learning provides information parents can use daily about providing a safe, happy and healthy environment for their children.

  • Real$ense Prosperity Campaign - While United Way’s target population primarily is individuals and families living at, near or below the poverty line, Real$ense provides services to all members of the community.  Their free financial classes and tax sites are open to the public. Only the matched savings program has income eligibility criteria.

  • United Way 2-1-1 - United Way 2-1-1 is the easy to remember, three-digit telephone number that connects callers from throughout Florida to health, social and human services and more than 3,800 community programs.  United Way 2-1-1 provides information and referral for: Emergency Financial Assistance; Services for veterans; Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services; Food, Shelter and Clothing; 24-hour Suicide and Crisis Intervention and Prevention.

Started in early 2011, organizations previously named Pursuit winners include Florida’s Vision Quest (March), Rails to Trails Conservancy (April), Memories of Love (May), the PACE Center for Girls (June) and American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund (July).
